Kasal is Star Cinema’s first offering for its 25^th anniversary. Kasal features Bea Alonzo, Paulo Avelino, and Derek Ramsay. It is directed by Ruel Bernal.

Kasal is the story of Lia Marquez (Bea Alonzo), a Cebuana grade school who is set to marry Cebu’s political prince and most sought after bachelor, Philip Cordero (Paulo Avelino). Lia and Philip’s love story is as romantic as the setting of their proposal. Things get complicated when Philip enters politics to continue his family’s legacy. In order to get a favorable response from the voters, his team decides to fix a bridge. Eduardo “Wado” dela Costa (Derek Ramsay), the senior engineer of the project, happens to be Lia’s ex-boyfriend who is hellbent to get her back.

For some reason or another, Lia and Wado get to spend time together and reminisce the past. As the dates of the wedding and the election get closer, Lia discovers that her fiancé is nowhere near the perfect man she thought he was.

Will Lia go through with the wedding or will Lia get cold feet and find solace in the arms of her ex?

Kasal is Bea Alonzo’s film and she is gorgeous in the poster and in the film. She is good in it except for that awkward crying scene where I could not tell whether or not she was crying or making pabebe cry. She is solid but not spectacular. However, Paulo Avelino acts the heck out of his complex character and shines. He does not look bored or too cool for his role, and he delivers his lines with aplomb. Derek Ramsay does what he normally does in films, flex his jaw and cheek muscles and stare at the camera with varying intensity in his eyes. He excels in it. But when Wado declares, “mukhang masaya ‘to, Mayor” a different side of his character appears, and Derek showcases that there is more to him than chiseled jaw and abs. He can be savage.

Aside from Paulo, Cris Villonco as Michelle the political strategist steals the show. She is believable as an empowered woman, so it is nice surprise to see her tender side in the last part of the movie (I will not say what it is so as not to spoil the film). Also, Michelle has the best lines in the film. Runner-up for best lines in the film is Kylie Verzosa’s Eunice. This beauty queen can act.
