Mr. & Mrs. Cruz – Hugot Edition

Viva Films and IdeaFirst Company’s Mr. & Mrs. Cruz revolves around two strangers who decide to run away from reality for a while and forget their miseries while basking in paradisical Palawan. Rafael “Raffy” Cruz (JC Santos) and Angela “Gela” Cruz (Ryza Cenon) have the same last name but are unrelated, yet they spend their alone time together as they mend their broken hearts.

Kita Kita’s (I See You) Sigrid Andrea Bernardo is the director and writer of Mr. & Mrs. Cruz. While Kita Kita seems natural and lighthearted, albeit the seriousness of the events in the film, Mr. & Mrs. Cruz feels forced and onerous. This film made me realize that Empoy Marquez can light up the big screen and be John Lloyd Cruz for 120 minutes while JC Santos cannot. The good thing is, Ryza Cenon registers well on screen and she makes Gela likeable despite her character’s many obvious flaws.

Watching two people talk about life tragedies, Shakespeare, finding closure, bird’s nest, and Nemo and make fun of corny hugot lines (is this redundant?) for two hours and ten minutes is just too much when the characters are not magnetic enough to hold my attention for more than fifteen minutes. The conversations are repetitive, and it is not done just for emphasis it seems (I dislike Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84 for the same reason). Moreover, that drinking scene in the bar is at least three minutes too long, and the dancing/swimming part reminds me of that weird dance sequence in Last Night.

It does not bode well for the movie if its highlight is a brief hack (one can turn a man’s underwear into a top suitable for swimming. Who knew?). Yes, not even JC Santos’ brief butt exposure can pique my interest.
