Netflix’s La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) Part 4 does not give a definitive ending to the Bank of Spain heist. It serves as the bridge between Part 3 and the upcoming Part 5. What La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) does is it eliminates a favorite character and introduces new ones to fill the gap.

Spoilers ahead:

The elimination refers to the brutal torture and execution of Nairobi (Alba Flores) at the hands of the head of security of the Bank of Spain César Gandía (José Manuel Poga). This is the first time a member of the gang dies due to a deliberate and rather personal action taken by the supposedly good guy. I screamed when Nairobi was shot and shed tears when Helsinki (Darko Perić) and Bogotá (Hovik Keuchkerian) wept. In that moment, I wished that Gandía would die in the most excruciating and prolonged manner. Nairobi is my favorite among the women characters – she is strong, smart, a straight talker, and contemplative. It is such a pity that she died that way. Or that she died at this juncture. Or that she died at all.

Among the new characters, the most interesting is Manila (Belén Cuesta) because of who she is and her name is five minutes away from where I am. At last, the Philippines has a city representative in the show (representations of Palawan and Mindanao do not count). I hope she will kick a lot of asses and bust a lot of balls, especially Gandía’s. So giddy! With the absence of Nairobi, Stockholm will now take over as the money maker. I hope she can be as encouraging and as exact as Nairobi.

I wrote in the previous post that the first four episodes show so much violence. Well, the last four ones top those, and a resolution is yet to be achieved. The Royal Mint heist was a boom, boom, ciao in terms of brevity and precision. This one is more like meeeeeh, meeeeeeh, ugh.

Some thoughts on La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) Part 4 Episodes 5 to 8 (more spoilers ahead):

– The surprise appearance from Moscow (Paco Tous) is a welcome gift.

– Juanito’s introduction is humorous and heart-tugging. 

– Nairobi’s rousing “chicken speech” in front of the welders and Bogotá while confined in a chair is a bright spot in a gloomy day.

– Denver (Jaime Lorente) and Rio’s (Miguel Herrán) conversations about Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) being a Maserati and a radioactive city give curious glimpses into the male psyche.

– The Professor’s (Álvaro Morte) control freakishness knows no bounds as exhibited by him instantly replacing the half-bitten cheese Nairobi carelessly leaves on the plate.

– Nairobi asking the professor to be a sperm donor is 100% Nairobi. So sad that I will not know what that baby will look like.

– The Governor of the Bank of Spain (Pep Munné) putting the pervert Arturo Román (Enrique Arce) in his proper place is priceless.

– I almost cried when Nairobi the La Puta Ama (the fucking boss), Oslo (Roberto Garcia Ruiz), Moscow, and Berlin (Pedro Alonso) were shown in one sequence. To the fallen Robin Hoods!

– The emotional moment between Helsinki and Palermo (Rodrigo de la Serna) earns the latter twenty pogi points.

– Who will save the Professor?

The Professor: The plan has some parts, details that are marvelous, but it doesn’t work as a plan. It does not work. Why did you bring me in?

Berlin: Because I want to share it with you. It’s the biggest heist of my life, and I want my brother to be there.

The Professor: You’ve called me to come up with ideas he’s not providing. And you, you know how to get the gold out, but not how to get the gang out. Also, you don’t have any idea how you’ll spend the rest of your lives with 90 tons of gold on you without being discovered. An analytical mind, even a limited one, would’ve considered that before anything else. But not you two. Because you’re in love with the plan, and he’s simply in love with you.

Berlin: We’re guided by passion, true, but you’re blinded by hatred. Hatred for romanticism.

The Professor: Well, maybe that’s because one of the principal themes of romanticism is suicide. Andrés, this plan is suicide.
