Unforgettable – Hugot Edition

Viva Films and The IdeaFirst Company’s Unforgettable is a breath of fresh air. It highlights kindness and compassion in the world full of meanness and heartlessness.
Unforgettable is about the story of Jasmine Lagman (Sarah Geronimo), an idiosyncratic lady with photographic memory. Jasmine lives with her grandmother Olive (Gina Pareño) in Baguio City where they run a successful café.

Jasmine is taken out of her comfort zone when Olive is diagnosed with tuberculosis and they cannot live together anymore due to Jasmine’s weak immune system. Jasmine has no choice but to live with her sister Dahlia’s (Ara Mina) family. With nothing to occupy her time, Jasmine strolls around the property and meets a stray dog, which later becomes her friend. She names the dog Happy (Milo). As she discovers Happy’s traits, Jasmine is convinced that Happy can cure Olive. The problem is, Jasmine and Happy are in Metro Manila and Olive is in Baguio.

With the help of her nieces and of benevolent strangers, Jasmine and Happy make their way from the chaotic jungle of Metro Manila to the verdant simplicity of Baguio City, with a side trip to Pagudpud.

Unforgettable is an endearing film that is perfect for the whole family. While all the actors, including the fun and funny cameos from big stars like Regine Velasquez and Anne Curtis, perform well in Unforgettable, it is undoubtedly the movie of Geronimo, Pareño, and Milo.

Geronimo is the embodiment of purity in heart and soul. Dennis Padilla’s taxi driver character is correct when he claims that after Virgin Mary, there is Jasmine. Geronimo is the same. Even in the scenes where she blurts out brutal rebuttals, she does so with charm.

Pareño is akin to that guardian angel who guides a child to grow up to be a good and upright citizen and after all the work is done, she leaves the child and moves on to another one. She has the maternal (or grand maternal?) instinct down pat and her connection with Geronimo is undeniable. One actually feels bad when they have to be separated.

Milo, like the name of the character in the movie, makes one happy by just looking at him. It is obvious that Milo is comfortable with Geronimo and their chemistry transcends that of two actors onscreen.

Honortable mention is Kim Molina’s Chuchay. She is a firecracker!

Unforgettable is directed by Jun Robles Lana and Perci Intalan. Maybe Filipino films need to have two directors to have an output as unforgettable as Unforgettable.
