La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) From the Words of the Thieves – Part 4 (Episodes 1 to 4)

Netflix’s La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) Part 4 or the second part of season 2 is undeniably much more violent than the heist of the Royal Mint. With the inclusion of blood-thirsty characters in Alicia Sierra (Naiwa Nimri) and Cesar Gandía (José Manuel Poga) as the negotiator and head of the security of the Bank of Spain, respectively, the new season of La Casa de Papel seems to veer away from the Professor’s (Álvaro Morte) ideology of robbing the institutions without killing.

Spoilers ahead: I have seen my beloved Berlin (Pedro Alonso) unnecessarily castrating a stranger with a fork in a men’s restroom (because the guy made fun of Berlin’s bow tie!), Nairobi (Alba Flores) almost killed by Gandía with a pillow, Helsinki (Darko Perić) almost dying from asphyxiation, and Denver (Jaime Lorente) turning Arturo Román (Enrique Arce) into a horizontal punching bag. The last one is something I do not care about because Arturo is a douchebag. However, I do not enjoy this degree of violence.

I got hooked because of the cerebral Professor, the charming but deadly Berlin, and the Robin Hood mentality of the whole gang. This season, the Professor is not his usual all-knowing self, there is no Berlin in the present (although I am immensely delighted by his continuous presence in flashback scenes), and the Robin Hood mentality is replaced with incessant bickering.  The last one makes it hard to keep track who is fighting whom. It takes the focus away from the heist. I know it adds drama, but it is not fun to watch a bunch of headless chicken make a lot of noise. If I wanted endless squabbles, I would have just watched our own teleseryes. And, Berlin did all the dramatic moments with so much grace and wit in Season 1. No one can beat that.

Speaking of my beloved Berlin, I am happy he found a Mrs. Fonollosa and they had a lovely wedding. The choir is a glorious flex. And yes, it is okay with me to share Berlin with Tatiana and the rest of humanity. He is that amazing.

Some thoughts on La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) Part 4 (more spoilers ahead):

- The governor of the Bank of Spain is an upstanding man. He lends Tokyo some support when she operates on Nairobi.

- Their depiction of Mindanao does not look like the Mindanao I know. The supposedly Filipina assistant and the rest of the background Filipinos do not look like Filipinos either - especially with the way they dress.

- Bogotá (Hovik Keuchkerian) is the living example of the saying “don’t judge by its cover”. He is the newfound father-replacement figure of Denver. He is also a sweetheart who seems to be truly smitten by Nairobi. I know their love story will not end well because they are in the middle of a heist, but one can dream that they will end up at the altar.

- I think that Berlin is too classy to castrate a man without a good reason. So sad.

“Everyone has a sniper aiming at their heart. But true terror isn’t when the bullets hit you. It’s when it takes away someone you love. The Professor was feeling that true terror more than any of us. His heart held two words that should never be together: love and death. And that fucked with his head while running through the forest, he could only think, “They’ve killed the love of my life.” But there was Lisbon very much alive. The two gunshots of her fake execution were pointed directly at the Professor’s mind. The Professor was drowning in his own grief. And with him, we were sinking, too.” – Tokyo

“Nairobi, stay strong. I’m here with you.” – Helsinki or Yashin Dasayev (Darko Perić)

“Death can be the greatest opportunity of your life, Sergio.” – Berlin

“What the fuck do you have inside of you? So much rage. So much violence. You shot a hostage. And now, you beat him up. I can’t do this.” – Stockholm or Mónica Gaztambide (Esther Acebo)

“I don’t know what your trauma is. I don’t know what your trauma is or where it comes from, but I can’t Denver. I can’t, and I don’t want to. I don’t want my son to feel that irrational violence you carry inside of you. I don’t want that.” – Stockholm

“The only way he’s getting away from us is when he’s dead.” – Colonel Tamayo

On that woman’s side, the one who makes illegal arrests, tortures, and abuses the power that was given to her by the Constitution. Or with us.” – The Professor

“Even with the truce, I still can’t sleep. At three in the morning, I was wide awake like an owl, thinking how the Professor was gonna fuck with us today.” – Colonel Tamayo

Palermo: I’m gonna head to the bathroom. Would you like to accompany me, Sergio? Have you ever had the privilege of experiencing masterful fellatio from a man with great skill?

The Professor: He’s completely unpredictable.

Berlin: Sergio, he was simply proposing some fellatio quite gallantly. He doesn’t know

The Professor: You know what I’m talking about. He’s uncontrollable because he’s abnormally egocentric.

Berlin: He will respect the hierarchy.

The Professor: He would respect it if the heist two hours, or three, or a night. We’re talking about multiple days, and he’ll be under higher pressure than usual.

The Professor: You can’t control him. He’s an egomaniac. He’s obsessed with being in charge. And that can only mean one thing. If it’s not him in charge, he’ll do anything he has to do to take control. And he won’t care if he has to execute, betray or create chaos.

Berlin: He’s obsessive, egocentric, trusts his instinct and is a true genius. Like you. If you prefer mediocre people, you’ll find plenty here in this room. They’ll follow you like sheep.

The Professor: Don’t you understand that being a genius complicates things? He’s dangerous because we won’t know what he’ll do. Listen to me. You’re my brother. I would put you in charge of any heist without a shadow of a doubt. But him …

Berlin: You’re wrong about trusting me and not him. I’m much less reliable.

“Are you angry with your mama? She didn’t breastfeed you enough Hmm? So you hate women because … you need milk desperately? Well, this order came from the Professor. And he has a dick, just like you.” – Tokyo

“I’m offering you freedom. Sergio goes to jail, but you go free. Your arrest was never official. You call them, you’ll get them to safety. In 24 hours, you’ll all be together. We’ll never come after you. Everything will be over.” – Alicia

“So what happened to the alpha male? I thought you were a free man.” – Tokyo

“They took me out of my cell at night, and forced me to dig my own grave out in the desert. Then, they made me drag a coffin in the hole I dug. Then they forced me to get inside. Then they threw sand into the hole. Until I was buried. And they left me there. In the darkness. In the silence. I could barely breathe.” – Rio

Palermo: You don’t trust me. I’m an egomaniac. I’m only willing to follow my plan. I’m so obsessed with being in charge that if something doesn’t go according to my plan I could become dangerous, no?

The Professor: That’s right. That’s what I believe.

Palermo: I’d agree. But there’s one thing you’re not considering. Not only do I love your brother, but I also love the plan, and that love is equal. I would betray you. That’s perfectly clear. And the rest of the gang, too. But the plan? Never. And that’s where my loyalty lies. This is so much more than a heist, and you know it. Right now, the plan isn’t perfect. I can recognize that. It’s an unfinished poem. We need you, brother. Please.

“Let’s look at those balls. Hang in there. And tell me what do you prefer, death. Look at me. Or impotence? Sometimes you’re forced to make tough decisions in life. Mine: What do I do with the asshole who’s making fun of my bow tie? Yours: Is it worth living without a penis?

The Professor: He’s taking a long time.

Palermo: He’s beating the shit out of the fat guy in the bathroom.

The Professor: I haven’t heard any punches or any other noise.

Palermo: Real chaos, my dear Sergio, makes no noise.

“Palermo was loyal to the plan, but in his mind, that only meant one thing. For the heist to continue, he had to be back in charge, and to do that, he would quietly create chaos we never saw coming.” – Tokyo

“You know what you have to do. Don’t be a coward. You have to dislocate the joint between the trapezium and the thumb’s first metacarpal with strength and determination. Grab your thumb and twist it. No handcuff can stop that.” – Palermo

“It’ll hurt a little bit, but your freedom will be worth it. Don’t you think so? Now do it.” – Palermo

Quotes from Part 4 Episode 4: Pasodoble of La Casa de Papel (Money Heist):

“Resistance, my fucking balls!” – Denver

“Life grew inside me, and death grew in him.” – Alicia

“I can’t just look a guy in the face, shoot him in the fucking chest and pretend nothing happened.” – Rio

“He told me he had a family. And he didn’t have a gun. I couldn’t do it.” – Rio

“Are you trying to say I’m a traitor.” – Rio

Berlin: He needs to be killed.

The Professor: Who?

Berlin: Him.

The Professor: We are not killers.

Berlin: Then we’re gonna be corpses.

“That bastard won’t leave with the state secrets. He won’t listen to our orders.” – Berlin

“I’m telling you to bet everything on the winning team: the gold.” – Berlin

“They have military weapons in there. I think he caresses them all afternoon, longing for the moment he can pull the trigger.” – Berlin

“When you face him, act decisively in self-defense, but without hesitation because he won’t hesitate. He’s a ruthless ex-mercenary. Relentless. And he’s going to try to kill you.” – The Professor

“If you’re calling to negotiate, press one. If you’re calling to surrender, press two. If you’re calling to ask what I’m wearing, press the pound sign.” – Alicia

“News of the truce was all over the country in minutes. It made for great headlines. But the photos were even better. The police delivered eight paellas, fourteen loaves of bread, and eight cases of wine to the door. It looked like we were throwing a party. But inside the bank, it felt like a prelude to a funeral. What you can’t see is usually more important than what’s right in front of you, and Gandía, who was about to fuck up our lives, was invisible.” – Tokyo

“Tokyo. I’ve just lost the cameras inside of the bank. All of them. You’re on your own.” – The Professor

“Things we can’t see affect our lives much more than we think.” – Tokyo

“Remember when I said that I wouldn’t touch you with a ten-foot pole? Well, I’ve been thinking.” – Nairobi

“When you said that pole thing, I was already yours. See, now I can absolutely picture you walking dressed in all-white, coming from over there, saying, “I do! I do!” – Bogotá

“Don’t get too excited because you and me, I’m not just gonna be another wife.” – Nairobi

“The things we can’t see are the things we obsess over the most. For instance, when you begin to doubt someone, it’s very difficult to stop.” – Tokyo

“Rio, why don’t you have any scars from the torture. And you don’t look like you lost any weight. How did he get away, Gandía?” – Stockholm

“We search for what we can’t see and often we forget that even though something’s invisible, it can still see you, and that’s when you’re in trouble.” – Tokyo

“You need to let me go. I smashed his head in with a stick. If you leave me tied up here like a lamb, you’re murdering me yourself, you son of a bitch. Let me go, please.” – Palermo

“Look, I know you have a lot of love for Tokyo. I know you went through a lot together. But do you really think she’s the leader we need right now? With your hand to your heart, do you really trust Tokyo?” – Palermo

“You have to let me go, my brother. You know it’s the right thing to do. You have to take me upstairs. You have to let me go.” – Palermo

“This whole thing’s a fucking mess. But I want you to know that I’m absolutely sure that you’re with us. And I know you’ll never betray us. Now let’s go get that son of a bitch!” – Denver

“Officially, I can only order you to wait and remain inactive. Even though that’s not what I’d like you to do. That everything you do will be just considered self-defense. There won’t be any legal problems. If you eliminate them all, you’ll be a her to me, to our investigators, and to the government of this country.” – Colonel Tamayo

“The most important moments are the ones that make you realize there’s no turning back. You’ve crossed the line, and you’re stuck on the other side now. And whether you like it or not, everything is about to change, so you hold on to the present, as if you could stop the disaster from coming.” – Tokyo
