Thai BBQ Original Restaurant – Glorietta 4

Thai BBQ Original Restaurant – Glorietta 4 had its soft opening yesterday, December 17, 2017. It was fortuitous that we Hope, Che, and I had our Christmas lunch and Hope’s birthday celebration on the same day, so the two ladies decided that Thai BBQ – Glorietta 4 was the perfect place for us to catch up, exchange gifts, and fill our bellies (mine is expanding at this very minute).

Thai BBQ serves authentic Thai cuisine with nuances of other Asian flavors that are not foreign to Filipino taste buds. Thai BBQ’s ground floor area is a little narrow, but there is a spacious dining area upstairs. The waitstaff was friendly and accommodating from the time we entered the place to the time we stepped out. Except for the long waiting time for our take away, service was efficient.

Spring Rolls, P280.00 (US $5.60). Delicious crisp rolls with selected fresh vegetables and meats. They are served with subtly sweet and spicy sauce. The spring rolls without the sauces were decent. I tried them with the spicy sauce and with the sweet sauce separately, I liked the spicy sauce better. The sweetness of the vinegar and the chopped chilies elevated the spring rolls to another level.

Papaya Salad, P280.00 (US $5.60). Shredded green papaya mixed in long beans, tomato, garlic, palm sugar, peanuts, chili in special sauce, and lime juice. It was very light in terms of flavor and in the stomach. The green papaya was okay, but it was nothing to crow about. The addition of peanuts gave the dish the much needed crisp element and a relief from all the veggies and liquid ingredients.

Tom Yum Goong, P380.00 (US $7.60). Shrimp in classic hot and sour Thai soup with mushrooms, lemon grass, chili paste, and secret spices. I like lemon grass, and it added another layer of smell and flavor to the whole dish. The shrimp that I had was thankfully not malnourished.

Crispy Deep-Fried Pork Belly, P380.00 (US $7.60). Deep-fried tender pork belly marinated with special seasoning. Served with sweet soy sauce, sesame, and chili. This was my favorite dish because it lived up to its name: it was crisp on the outside but tender and not dry on the inside. It went well with the sauce.

Bagoong Fried Rice, P420.00 (US $8.40). Fried rice with Thai shrimp paste. The shrimp paste was present throughout the dish, and the other ingredients highlighted instead of detracting from the star of the dish, the fried rice.

Ripe Mango Shake, P140.00 (US $2.80). To borrow my favorite travel companion’s expression, “it’s perfect!”.

Watermelon Shake, P140.00 (US $2.80)
