At 4pm on February 17, 2018, the pilgrim relics of Marie Francoise Thérèse Martin or St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus arrived at Carmel of Thérèse along Gilmore Avenue, Quezon City. The 6pm anticipated mass was presided by Fr. Godwin Tatlonghari. It was followed by blessing and distribution of roses. Public veneration continued until 10pm that same day.
St. Thérèse has been acclaimed “the greatest saint of modern times”, and in 1997, Pope John Paul II declared St. Thérèse a Doctor of the Church – the only Doctor of his pontificate – in tribute to the powerful way her spirituality has influenced people all over the world.
The Pilgrim Relics of St. Thérèse is in the Philippines for the fourth time from 12 January to 31 May 2018. After three visits of St. Thérèse’s Pilgrim Relics to the Philippines (2000, 2008, and 2013), countless faithful have been touched, renewed, and reinvigorated in the witnessing of their lives for Jesus. Her previous visits have given the Filipinos so much graces and heavenly favors ; thus, the theme: Salamat, St. Thérèse!
The Reliquary that travels around the world (Pilgrim Relics) is originally called the “Centennial Reliquary”, as this was made during the Centenary of her death in 1997. It is made from precious tropical scented jacaranda hardwood from South America. The main case of the Relics, which is inserted into this Reliquary, is a solid silver case, dipped in gold.
Once again, the Military Ordinariate of the Philippines (MOP) has been endorsed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and approved by the Basilica of St. Thérèse in Lisieux, France, to be the official host of this visit of St. Thérèse to our country.
