#QuaranTreats: Heny Sison To-Go

Heny Sison is one of the known Filipino pastry chefs and cake decorators around. Her eponymous culinary school has been in existence since 1985. It has taught hundreds of professionals and food fans lifestyle and essential classes. Recently, it started teaching online classes as well.

Like the shift in the culinary education, Heny Sison has also added pick-up services for its selected cakes, breads, sandwiches, pasta, bottled, frozen, and chilled products, and dried goods. I have tasted their Spanish bread, P90.00 (US $1.86) per pack of six, and cheese chichacorn, P120.00 (US $2.48) per pack, and I enjoyed both of them thoroughly. The Spanish bread was soft and almost pillowy and the filling is delectable. The chichacorn was the usual brand one can see from Ilocos or from the supermarkets but it made me happy and made munching it worth the hassle.

Heny Sison Desserterie’s Cashew Lengua de Gato, P150.00 (US $3.09) played with the taste buds with its buttery texture and not-so-sweet taste. The size is bigger than most lengua de gato and it was shaped like a flat disc. Although I could barely detect the cashew, I would buy this again.

Heny Sison Desserterie’s Almond Polvoron, P180.00 (US $3.71) was a bit of a letdown. It did not have any taste at all.

Heny Sison Desserterie’s Sansrival Bites reminded me of merengue – but the nuttier and less sweet version of it.

Heny Sison Desserterie’s Tablea de Cacao, P110.00 (US $2.27) was a pleasant surprise. It looked dark and the cacao looked refined but the best thing about it was the taste. It was not as bitter as the 100% cacao from Davao or Cagayan de Oro and it could be eaten on its own or be diluted in a small quantity of milk or water to make a concentrated chocolate drink. It was yum!

Heny Sison Desserterie’s sugar-coated peanuts were not sealed properly. Except for the ribbon tied on one end of the packaging, there was nothing that prevented air from entering the packaging and changing the texture of the peanut. It did not taste any different than the ones sold in the streets.
