The Old Vice President’s Office and the Southeast Gallery
As the second highest government official, the Vice President was usually reserved the room at the northeast end of the second floor of the Executive Building for his use until the abolition of the Office of the Vice President with the promulgation of the 1973 Constitution. However, the room has not been used by the Vice President even with the restoration of the office in the 1987 Constitution.
This room and the Southeast Gallery now showcase the memorabilia of the incumbent president, Rodrigo Roa Duterte – the first Philippine president to hail from Mindanao, and the first to be elected to the Office directly from a local government post. Portraits, plaques, and other gifts to the President from the country and abroad are displayed in these two rooms.
President Duterte, the Philippines’ first Mindanaoan President wore a Mindanao Silk Barong designed by Mimi Parrel-Pimentel of Cagayan de Oro City. The fine fabric of this barong is made from 100 percent silk thread carefully handwoven by the weavers of Mindanao. It is an apt reminder that he is indeed the champion of the Mindanao people’s dreams and aspirations.
The Philippine flag embroidered on the left breast symbolizes Pres. Duterte’s intense love for the country. The pants, made from corduroy fabric, which was the President’s personal choice, is also a testimony of his simplicity and down to earth nature.
Pres. Duterte’s Inaugural Medallion is satin antique-finished brass and is 20 mm. The obverse (front) has “16th President of the Republic of the Philippines, Rodrigo “Rody” Roa Duterte, June 30th 2016” and bust of Pres. Duterte. The reverse (rear) side has the Seal of the President of the Philippines.
Dendrobium Rodrigo Roa Duterte is a compact, robust, and vigorous hybrid. It produces upright flower sprays that bear up to 15 striking and well-arranged blooms, each velvety bloom measuring about six (6) cm across. The sepals and petals are attractive violet-red and complementing each bloom is a lip of the same tone but darker.
This orchid is named after His Excellency Rodrigo Roa Duterte, President of the Republic of the Philippines, on the occasion of his visit to the National Orchid Garden on 16 December 2016.
The Digong Sword was crafted in a time when hope was diminishing. It tells a story of inspiration, where one small island country in the Pacific is seen rising from the quagmire of defeat through a binding leader whose heart speaks nothing but compassion and patriotism.
Inspired by the iron-fisted leadership of Pres. Duterte, the Digong Sword resembles bravery, sense of fairness, and equity that will resonate through generations.
The Presidential Museum and Library is open to the public.
