This week, my friends and I had a late lunch at Behrouz Persian Cuisine in Scout Tobias, Timog, Quezon City. I was so famished by the time we entered the entrance. As it is customary these days (at least in the establishments that follow the Covid-19 IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases rule), we had written our names and contact details and had our hands disinfected with alcohol before we sat down in one of the physically-distanced areas inside Behrouz Persian Cuisine.
It took us mere minutes to order our food and while waiting for our lunch, I checked the freezer that contains the available desserts and chose Toblerone Chocolate Ice Cream Cake among five varieties.
Given that we were there on a rainy weekday afternoon in a period where few people like to go out much less dine in a confined place, Behrouz Persian Cuisine was doing well. The place was 30% full but the customer turnover was high – the kitchen churned out food quickly and the staff was efficient.
It is not a surprise because Behrouz Persian Cuisine has been in the business since 1985. It is the first establishment to offer authentic Persian cuisine in the Philippines. It has since grown to a handful of branches. Some of the notable dishes offered by Behrouz Persian Cuisine are their kebabs that come in beef, chicken, and lamb.
There were four of us but three of us ordered the same thing – chelo beef kebab kobideh with Jasmine rice. The chelo beef kebab kobideh comes with two pieces of beef kebab, grilled tomatoes, rice and butter, and iced tea. All for *P270.00 (US $5.57). A friend and I upgraded our iced tea to yogurt shake for an additional of P40.00 (US $0.83), and it was a good decision. I mixed the slice of butter with my rice to make it moist and add flavor to it. The beef kebabs were tasty and juicy. I added yogurt sauce and a spicy one to my beef kebabs and they elevated the flavor to a different level. Wow! The grilled tomatoes were fresh and succulent. Together, they made a great meal and I think I polished off every morsel in less than 15 minutes! The yogurt shake is smooth and creamy enough and a nuanced tanginess.
For dessert, we had the Toblerone chocolate ice cream cake, P100.00 (US $2.06). It was a letdown because I did not taste the Toblerone and the chocolate flavor did not come through.
What makes that meal at Behrouz Persian Cuisine a decent experience was not the beef kebab but its accommodating and cheerful staff who happened to be Ilonggo.
