Alone/Together – Hugot Edition

Alone/Together is a film written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone featuring the popular Lizquentandem of Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil.

Alone/Together is everything that a romantic drama movie needs and more. There is kilig and heartache. However, and more importantly, it also shows art in many forms, references popular culture (which made my heart flutter because I grew up listening to Eraserheads), tackles idealism and ambition and painfully parallels the last two with reality and failure.

Alone/Together is a movie for loveteams who have grown up and are brave enough to step out of the rainbows-and-butterflies universe and step into the real world of corporate careers, saving lives, longing, and loneliness in relationships.

As Tin, the idealist iskolar ng bayan who finds out that the academe is different than life after college, Liza showcases that she is not only a pretty face but an actress. Her kilig is palpable and her tormented soul is as obvious. Her glow overshadows the pimples on her face and makes one believe that beauty is more than skin deep.

As Raf, Enrique takes the backseat to let her ladylove shine, just like what Daniel Padilla did for Kathryn Bernardo in The Hows of Us. His overeager character is loveable and never annoying. It makes me want to have a Raf in my life, to support me and give me wings enough to make me fly.

Black Sheep’s Alone/Together is a minimalist romantic movie with depth. It dispenses with the family drama and the best friends-as-audience-surrogate to focus on Tin and Raf. It is a wise decision because Tin and Raf have stories to tell – stories one wants to listen to and learn from.
